You cannot buy your way into AI recommendations, but you can become structurally competitive in about 90 days: fix foundations in month one, become quotable in month two, start compounding authority in month three. This is the sequence we run with new clients. It is written so you can run it yourself if you never hire anyone.
The urgency is not marketing. In the first four months of 2026, 68% of US Google searches ended without a click, and 45% of consumers now ask an AI tool for local business recommendations — against 6% a year earlier. The window where doing nothing was survivable has closed.
Days 1–30: Foundations
Nothing else works if machines cannot read you clearly. This month is unglamorous, cheap, and produces the largest single jump of the ninety days.
- Baseline first. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode the ten questions your customers ask before buying. Fresh session, no history. Record how many name you. Without this number you cannot tell later whether any of this worked.
- Entity cleanup. One canonical business name, address, phone and description — identical on your website, your Google Business Profile, and every directory that mentions you. Not similar. Identical.
- Technical pass. Indexation, sitemap, speed, mobile experience, broken links. If a page is not indexed it cannot be cited, and this is where we most often find pages quietly missing.
- Schema, once, correctly. Organization, LocalBusiness or Service, and FAQPage on core pages. Set expectations here: Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added schema against 4,000 controls and found no meaningful citation uplift. Do it because it disambiguates who you are, not because it is a growth lever. Then stop touching it.
- Google Business Profile. Audit your primary category against the businesses outranking you, complete every field, fix your hours. In Whitespark’s 2026 factors report the primary category is the top-weighted local pack signal, and “open at the time of search” is now in the top five.
- Conversion tracking. Calls, forms and bookings tagged by source, live before you spend another dollar. Otherwise month three produces opinions instead of evidence.
What you should see by day 30: nothing in citations. Possibly small movement in the local pack from the category and hours fix. This month buys you the right to be measured.

Days 31–60: Become quotable
Now you give the engines something worth lifting. The constraint to hold in your head: a model will not quote a sentence it cannot separate from your hedging.
- Narrow the specialty. Replace “full-service” with something a machine can match to a question. This is a positioning decision more than a copy decision, and it is the one most owners resist.
- Rewrite the top three pages answer-first. First paragraph answers the question the page exists for, in self-contained sentences, with real numbers and real place names. Then show the work below.
- Publish for the fan-out, not the keyword. When Ahrefs re-measured in March 2026, the share of AI Overview citations from top-10 organic results had fallen from 76% to 38%, because Google now expands a query into sub-questions and pulls sources from that wider field. Covering the adjacent questions credibly now matters more than ranking for the head term.
- Answer the objections in public. Pricing, timelines, what goes wrong, who you are not for. These are the questions people actually ask assistants, and almost nobody publishes real answers to them.
What you should see by day 60: first citations on narrow, specific questions. Usually the long-tail ones — “who does X in Y for Z kind of customer” — not the head terms.
Month one makes you legible. Month two makes you quotable. Month three makes you trusted. Skip one and the next two do not compound.Aldo Rendón Migliuolo, founder, Remi Creative

Days 61–90: Start compounding
The first two months are things you do to your own property. This month is about the rest of the internet, which is where the strongest signals actually live.
The Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands across millions of AI responses found branded web mentions correlating with AI visibility at 0.66–0.71 and YouTube mentions at roughly 0.737, while backlink counts and URL rating showed “very weak correlations” and page count almost none. That ordering should decide how you spend this month.
- Get mentioned, not linked. A podcast, a local business roundup, a supplier or partner write-up, a genuinely useful answer somewhere your customers read. Unlinked mentions count. One real mention beats twenty directory submissions.
- Put your face on video. YouTube mentions were the strongest single correlate measured. You do not need production value; you need to be the named person answering a real question on a platform models ingest heavily.
- Build the review habit. Ten per quarter, forever, asked at delivery. 74% of consumers look for reviews from the last three months and 47% will not use a business with fewer than twenty. Reply to every one, specifically — generic replies make half of consumers less likely to choose you.
- Re-run the baseline. Same ten questions, same conditions, day 90. Compare to day zero. This is the only honest verdict on the quarter.

What to expect, honestly
Most 90-day plans in this category are sold with a curve that goes up and to the right. Here is the real shape.
| Window | What moves | What does not |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–30 | Local pack position, indexation, page speed | AI citations. Nothing yet, and that is correct |
| Days 31–60 | First citations on narrow questions, impressions in Search Console | Head terms, competitive national queries |
| Days 61–90 | Citation frequency, branded search, enquiry volume | Anything resembling a plateau — this is where it starts, not finishes |
| Months 4–12 | Compounding: mentions attract mentions, citations attract citations | Overnight anything |

Three honest caveats. Some questions are not winnable — if a national brand owns a head term, your ninety days will not change that, and targeting it is how budgets get wasted. Citations fluctuate: an engine that named you in March may not in April, because model updates reshuffle everything, which is why you track a rate over time rather than a single check. And none of this works on a business that is not actually good at the thing; AI recommendations are downstream of real-world reputation, which is the one input no amount of markup substitutes for.
For the underlying framework, start with what search visibility means in 2026. For the citation mechanics in detail, see the seven factors that drive AI citations. If you are a local business, run the Maps playbook alongside month one.
Frequently asked questions
Can I really do this in 90 days without hiring an agency?
The first month, yes — entity cleanup, Google Business Profile, schema and tracking are all owner-doable in a handful of focused hours. Month two is a writing problem, which is doable if you can write plainly about your own work. Month three is the hardest to self-serve, because getting mentioned somewhere credible depends on relationships and on having something worth saying.
What if I see no AI citations at day 90?
Check three things before concluding it failed. First, are you targeting questions anyone actually asks, or terms you wish they asked? Second, is your entity genuinely consistent — one contradictory directory listing is enough to keep you ambiguous. Third, has anyone outside your own website mentioned you in the last ninety days? Absent that, the engines have nothing to corroborate.
Should I focus on AI search or classic SEO?
They are no longer separable, but the weighting has shifted. Ranking still feeds the citation pool — 38% of AI Overview citations come from top-10 pages. The other 62% come from the wider topical field Google’s fan-out reaches, which is won with coverage and corroboration rather than with one optimized page.
Does this plan work for a business that is not local?
Yes, with month one adjusted. Skip the Google Business Profile work and spend that time on entity consistency across industry directories, professional bodies and partner sites. Months two and three are identical: answer-first content, then third-party corroboration.
